Welcome to Year 3!
Miss Drew is the class teacher and we are supported by Miss Ahmed.
In the Autumn term, the Year 3 children will be studying the Ancient Egyptians. We will be studying various aspects of this fascinating period from history such as investigating timelines, locating countries, examining artefacts and creating pieces of art. We will also be planning a visit to the Oriental Museum in Durham as part of our topic this half term. Please have a look at the topic letter below for more information.
In the second half of the term, we will be exploring a science based topic entitled ‘Sounds of Christmas’. This science based topic will involve lots of investigations exploring how sounds are made, how sound travels and how it varies in pitch and volume. We will be investigating patterns between the sounds and features of different objects and will be testing which materials act as good insulators to block out sound.
Here is a brief outline of the equipment your child will need for school, the class timetable and an explanation of some of our routines.
Homework is set every week and will cover a range of subjects. Homework is based on what we have been learning in school over the previous week or may be a more open-ended research task. Your child should be able to tackle most tasks independently; however it is advisable to check their understanding of each task and to encourage them to take pride in their work. Homework should be handed in every Thursday and this will be marked and returned home with new homework on a Friday.
Spellings and Rapid Recall:
New spellings and rapid recall will be issued every Friday and need to be learnt for tests on the following Thursday. Rapid recall will test the children’s mental skills and will help them to learn vital number facts. It is important that the children continue to practise their times table facts throughout the year.
Reading books will be changed daily in class by your child if they have finished their book. Children are encouraged to read every night if possible and to share their reading with an adult. We have a class reading chart which is completed every Friday and the children are reward for regular home reading.
PE will be on Mondays and Fridays for the first half term. This may change in the second half term. Please could all children have their kit in school at the start of every week in preparation for their lesson.
