Welcome to Class 4!
In Class 4, the teacher is Miss Hugill and the children are also supported by Mrs Adamson. Our door is always open and should you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.
During the Autumn Term, the children in Year 4 will be learning all about the Ancient Egyptians. We will be looking at both geography and history in this topic, using our map skills to look at where Egypt is as well as exploring some of the key events in the history of the Ancient Egyptians. We will be using at information from a range of sources and conducting our own research on computers. Please see the topic letter below for further information.
After October half term, we will be moving onto a science based topic entitled, ‘Sounds of Christmas’. We will be using our investigative skills to investigate different sounds. A topic letter will follow for this.
Here is a brief outline of the equipment your child will need for school, the class timetable and an explanation of some of our routines.
Your child will receive new homework each Friday and this will cover a range of subjects. Therefore, we would appreciate it if homework could be handed in each Thursday at the latest. Homework will be based on the work we have covered that week in class or may be a research based task for a topic we are studying. Sometimes an extended project will be given over several weeks and the children will be expected to produce work that reflects the time they have been given to complete it. They will need to plan their work and should only need minimal parental support. Homework tasks are differentiated to meet your child’s needs, as closely as possible, and your child should be able to manage their tasks with a little support. It can be helpful to ensure your child fully understands what they are expected to do by discussing this with them before they start. If your child is struggling with a task, please just let us know and we will address this with them in school. Please encourage your child to present all homework as neatly as they would when working in class.
Every Friday, the children will have a Rapid Recall test based on the work we have been doing in class. It will focus on mental calculations such as rounding, for example, and the aim is for children to practise these facts and skills so that they are quick and accurate when they need to recall and apply them in different contexts. Rapid Recall books will be sent home every Friday with a new area to work on. Please return Rapid Recall books to school on a Friday.
Weekly spellings are sent home every Friday and need to be learnt for a test the following Friday. Please use the ‘Look, cover, write, check’ method to learn these words and return the book to school on a Friday. Spellings should be practised at least twice a week in the green spelling book and stickers or team points will be given each week for doing so.
Please continue to encourage your child to read as often as possible at home. Although they may be reading independently, your child will still enjoy sharing their reading with you and it is important to check their understanding by asking them questions about the text. What facts have they learnt? What did that character mean? Why did they do that? What do you think will happen next? Did you like this book and why? Why did the author choose that word or phrase? Please sign your child’s reading record when they have read at home and, whenever possible, include a short comment. It is lovely to hear about the discussions they have had with you about their reading.
Times Tables Challenge:
Each Thursday, the children will complete the ‘Ultimate Times Tables Challenge’. They have 10 minutes to answer as many of the 144 questions as possible with the aim of beating their score each week. We would appreciate any extra work on Times Tables throughout the year to support the children with this.
Compulsory Multiplication Check:
During the summer term, all Year 4 students will be required to take part in a multiplication check. A letter will follow giving further details about this, however it is important that children practise their times tables as much as possible at home.
PE slots will sometimes need to change during the year as we have coaches coming in to teach different sports and the days they are available can change. We will always keep you informed about any changes, but it is a good idea for your child to have their kit in school throughout the week. For the first half term, PE will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
In Year 4, all children will be learning a brass instrument with a specialist music teacher. Mr Mackay will be teaching brass lessons every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child brings their instrument to school every Tuesday.
